If you haven’t heard of the famous Bahamas swimming pigs then I am sorry this is how you are learning about them. The Bahamas swimming pigs are truly amazing animals and it is such a tragedy that their numbers have recently been thinned out due to the negligence of some tourists passing through…
What was originally a colony of 22 pigs has been knocked down to 15 after a group of tourists reportedly fed the famous bahamas swimming pigs beer and rum. Their act of stupidity killed seven of these amazing animals, and the world is furious about it!
One of the pigs owners found his pigs dead in the water off Exuma Cays. He reported his findings to the government which prompted them to ban tourists from feeding them.
The owner reportedly said:
“The pigs were given the wrong food.”
“We had the government vet in there [who] examined them all thoroughly. He gave them shots, he gave them medicine, and I was there and I worked with them for three days straight.”
“We had them pigs there almost 30 years, and never has this happened before, but now we are going to have to regulate it.”
“Right now it’s blowing out of proportion with people, anybody, bringing food there, anybody doing what they [want to] do. We have people coming there giving the pigs beer, rum, riding on top of them, all kinds of stuff.”
Currently there is no ban on viewing and enjoying the bahamas swimming pigs. The owners of the pigs are rightfully concerned about their animals as there have been numerous reports of tourists harming local animals such as turtles and dolphins in the area.
Hopefully the feeding ban will prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again. We certainly do not want the bahamas swimming pigs to go anywhere any time soon.
